Scutt salutes guts of young Dons

Nick Scutt has hailed the 'guts and application' of Hambledon's teenage talents after a brilliant victory over Hook & Newnham Basics on Saturday.

The Dons recorded a 26-run triumph over one of the pre-season Southern Electric Premier League division two title favourites at Ridge Meadow.

Skipper Dan Hewitt produced a man-of-the-match display with the bat, striking an 84-ball 91 on a day when all other batters struggled.

But it was the determination of the likes of Eddie Lewis, 15, Will Mann, 17, and Hew Richards, 14, who provided the support for Hewitt to post a total of 215 after winning the toss.

Scutt, who took two catches and two stumpings on an impressive return behind the sticks, said: 'Despite (Paul) Vickers, Rob (Atkins), myself the vintage Indi (Chakrabarti) of 2012 bringing the average age and weight of the team up considerably, a lot should be said for the three under-18s in the side.

'They showed huge guts and application in helping skipper Dan Hewitt lead a superb batting recovery.

'Great partnerships with Eddie and Will allowed us to post a competitive total.

'Dan stroked the ball all round the ground for a cracking 91 - throwing in long periods of solid blocking and nurdling for good measure.'

After Paul Vickers was run out for eight, James Scutt (11), Rob Atkins (21) and Indy Chakrabarti (16) got starts but failed to settle as Hook took control.

Hewitt then led a spirited fightback which ultimately delivered Hambledon's second success in their opening three league fixtures.

He first found support with Lewis, whose 14 off 30 balls included three fours, and then Mann, who found the fence twice, in his 21 off 45 balls.

Richards added late support, with seven from 21 balls, as he helped Hewitt push the score passed 200.

Hewitt went for 91 - which included 12 boundaries - and Richards was caught aiming for a maximum off the last ball but by that point Hambledon were right in the game.

And so it proved as a steady flow of wickets saw Hambledon prevented Hook setting a platform to chase down the target.

Hewitt (one for 25) removed opposite number Ben Thane early on, while there were wickets for Cameron Prentice (two for 27), Mann (two for 32) and James Scutt (two for 34).

Rupert Hetherington produced a brilliant bowling display on his seasonal debut. But once again he was relatively luckless as he returned figures of just one for 27.

And with Mann adding a superb run out, even a late charge from the final wicket pair of Anik Divecha and Ben Peart could not deny the Dons.

Keeper Scutt added: 'Hook's top order never looked like recovering after losing Thane early to the lethal Hewitt/Chakrabarti combo.

Superb spells from Rupert, Jimbo and Prentice the Elder never allowed them to stay in touch with the run-rate - or post a partnership of more than 50.

Hambledon's very own hair model Wilbert Mann then capped off his fine bowling performance with the final wicket in his second spell.'
