Young Dons strengthen title grip

Hambledon have strengthened their grip on the South East Hants Indoor League under-16s crown.

The young Dons snatched a 15-run triumph over title rivals Portsmouth at Fareham Leisure Centre.

Both sides were unbeaten heading into the top-of-the-table showdown but it was Portsmouth who drew first blood.

After losing the toss, they removed JJ Brown and Rory Prentice for ducks to leave Hambledon rocking on 10 for two after two overs.

Eddie Lewis and Spencer Le-Clercq came to the rescue, though, teaming up for a match-winning stand of 60.

Lewis struck 40 , while Le-Clercq carried his bat for a stunning 50 as the Dons closed on a very competitive 112 for five after their 12 overs.

With the momentum now in their favour, Hambledon struck early to restrict Portsmouth's reply.

Brown ran out both openers with direct hits at the bowler's end while fielding at point.

And a brilliant one-handed catch from George Harding off his own bowling followed to leave Portsmouth struggling at 30 for three.

Portsmouth never recovered and finally finished on 97 for five, giving Hambledon a 15-run win and reasserting their authority at the top of the table.

They are now 16 points clear, having recorded seven consecutive victories.
